Introduction
The Kyungwoon Museum, established in 2003, is dedicated to promoting the Korean costume culture from the early modern era.
Founded in 2003 through the collective efforts of Kyunggi Girls' High School alumni, the Kyungwoon Museum celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023. Originally comprising around 600 items from the school's dormitory, the museum's collection now boasts of approximately 15,000 artifacts.
Since its inaugural exhibition titled "Early Modern Costumes and Korean Culture," the Kyungwoon Museum has dedicated itself to showcasing the aesthetic, academic, and historical importance of royal attire from the early modern era, alongside modern and contemporary clothing and textiles, through a series of 40 special exhibitions.
In addition to curating these exhibitions and publishing their catalogues, the museum has offered high-quality lectures and hands-on learning programs linked to the exhibitions. Furthermore, royal costumes from the Korean empire such as the Twelve-Stringed Robe, the Pheasant Patterned Ceremonial Roble, the Emperor’s Golden Robe with Dragon Insignia, and an Official’s Black Robe with a Round Neck were reproduced, all thanks to the devoted work of alumni volunteers. The museum received more than ten awards for its exhibition catalogues and educational programs, which have further bolstered volunteer activities.
The Kyungwoon Museum is a creative and beautiful space that breathes life into history and tradition, facilitating various modes of communication across different generations. It is now embarking on a new era, poised to realize greater dreams. With the approval of the Friends of Kyungwoon Museum Inc. in 2023, we are committed to evolving into a specialized and forward-thinking institution that is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Korean costume culture.
We hope to expand our horizons and offer opportunities for local community members passionate about culture and the arts to showcase their talents. We invite you to explore the new Kyungwoon Museum website, updated in keeping with the shifting currents of social change.
